Letter from the Superintendent

When trying to determine the next six weeks of school, we have a lot of things to consider while trying to protect the health and safety of our staff and students: stakeholder feedback, flu season, critical support personnel, and COVID-19 data. Here are the key points:

  • Traditional face-to-face instruction for 3K through 12th grades for five of the six weeks

  • Three days of remote learning are Monday, 11/23, Tuesday, 11/24, and Friday, 12/18 (half-day). We previously announced that 11/23 and 11/24 are remote learning days to help families who travel during Thanksgiving. These two days will be asynchronous learning; teachers will have office hours but no Webex sessions.  Teachers will provide assignments starting on Monday, 11/16Assignments are due on Friday, 12/4.

  • No school on Thanksgiving (11/25 - 11/27) and winter holiday breaks (12/21 - 1/1).  Students return to school on Monday, 1/4/2021.

Stakeholder feedback shows that some want full face-to-face with no restrictions, and others think that any in-person school is an unnecessary risk. For balance, we offer face-to-face instruction along with opportunities for remote learning during Thanksgiving and the half-day before the holiday break. While it is impossible to predict the impact of illness during our next six-week schedule, we hope to use our Thanksgiving and holiday breaks to limit the number of exposed students and employees.

This time of year starts one of our most difficult time periods in public education as we battle flu season. We expect the combination of COVID-19 and the flu season to be difficult. Our nurses have done an outstanding job of dealing with the many medical needs of students. We will rely on their expertise and the medical community to prepare for it.

Some of our concerns are not related to the classroom. We must have enough critical support personnel in every school. We have a need for additional personnel in these areas: nurses, bus drivers, custodians, and food service workers. Delays or closures at schools might occur due to the lack of critical support personnel in these areas. We will attempt to follow the third six-week schedule; however, we have struggled to remain open several times due to the number of employees who were unable to work.

Each day a team evaluates the number of positive cases and quarantines.  As you can see in the COVID-19 chart below, we have seen an increase in positives and quarantines as the temperature decreased.  Data is updated weekly for transparency: SDPC Weekly COVID-19 Case Report

Fourth Six-Week Schedule
(Weeks 19 -24: January 11, 2021 – February 19, 2021)

We plan to announce the fourth six-week schedule prior to winter break.  We have several things to consider. End of course tests and semester exams are at the beginning of this window and schedules need to be determined.  Additionally, we will closely monitor the impact of the cold and flu season.  We will attempt to have as much traditional face-to-face learning as we can safely offer; however, we respectfully ask parents to make plans for more remote learning during this time period just in case it's needed.
