Breakthrough in School Choice
Posted on 09/06/2017

Exciting progress is being made in SDPC's Breakthrough in School Choice Initiative!

Central Elementary School and McKissick Elementary School have been chosen to become theme-based magnet schools in the 2018-2019 school year.

The selection of Central and McKissick as sites for the magnet programs was influenced by feedback gained through the district-wide School Choice Survey taken by parents, community, and staff members over the summer. Other considerations such as location, enrollment, and school capacity were taken into account during the selection process.

The purpose of a magnet school theme-based program is improved teaching and learning, addressing diversity, and addressing school capacity through school choice options.

In December, the SDPC administration will present the school board with a plan for a theme-based magnet program for both schools. The plans will be based on theNational Magnet School Standards of Excellence.  Summer survey results, as well as additional school-based surveys to be conducted in September, will influence the design of the magnet programs. SDPC administrators will meet with stakeholder groups from the Central and McKissick staff and communities between now and December to ensure that parents, teachers, and businesses have an active role in the selection of a theme and the development of the magnet programs.
